The Meats Judging Team improved 151 points finished third at the Beef Empire Days and the American Royal contests.
"Compared to the teams that beat us we improved the most from our previous contest," Clint Alexander, meats team coach, said.
Alexander said the team didn't come away from either contest with a great score but wasn't concerned because of the judging.
"The guys and gals did just what I wanted them to," Alexander said. "The product was terrible, the committee was too inexperienced and, therefore, we were beat by Clarendon and Fort Scott."
The team scored 3,428 points only 265 points behind Fort Scott Community College winning 3rd place at the Beef Empire Days and 36 points behind Clarendon College in Texas at the American Royal competition in Emporia, Kan.
"If my gals and guys would have had higher scores, it would mean that they were not doing what they were coached to do," Alexander said. "I am very happy with how they did, because they placed the classes right."
The contest included competition in meat grading, judging, placings and questions in beef, pork and lamb categories.
"It was difficult because the chairman decided to draw straws and select who did what [in competition categories]," Alexander said. "We had people competing in categories they wouldn't normally compete in."
Alexander said that the competition for the meats team isn't like basketball where they combine all the games instead to win the championship it all relies on whether or not they win the last competition.
"These competitions are preparing us for the championship and we will come from that strong," Alexander said.
The meats team was successful in individual competition. Matthew Morales, Satanta, Kan., had a high score of 876 points at the Beef Empire Days and Paden Daniels, Athol, Kan., had a high score of 936 points at American Royal competition.
The team will leave soon for the national championship competition at Plainview, Texas, Oct. 24.
