More than 60 motorcycle enthusiasts roared down the highway Saturday, Oct. 14, to take part in the Broncbuster Athletic Association's Poker Run. Christina and Gregg Joy, Garden City, were among those who paid $30 to enter the event, which raised money for athletic scholarships.
"We go to these events frequently and it's great to see all walks of life participating," Christina Joy said.
The Joys said it's the people and the good cause's that keep them coming back.
"Even though it's great to get out and ride with a group of people, the good cause and people make it fun," Christina Joy said.
Mike Blau, Garden City, said the event is a chance to ride and meet people as well as support something that he benefited from as a student. "I want to help some kid out with a scholarship the same way I was helped out with a scholarship," Blau said.
The event began with registration at Jax Sports Bar in Garden City before Finney County sheriff's deputies escorted the riders through town and off to their first destination.
The ride took about three hours to complete with stops at Clark's Motor Sports, Dodge City Harley-Davidson and locations in Montezuma and Sublette before returning to Garden City High School. At each stop, riders received a number to add to their "poker" hand. Manuel Terrazas, Garden City, earned the best poker hand and won $600.
Greg Greathouse, health and physical education division director, said riders were treated to a hamburger feed and T-shirts.
"The community really stepped up to make this year's event possible and thanks to them, all the riders had a great time," Greathouse said.
