A former Garden City Community College and Garden City High School student was killed Tuesday, Oct. 31, following a marine training accident at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Cpl. Seth M. Algrim, 22, died after being wounded in an urban combat training exercise.

Algrim was a 2003 GCHS graduate and attended GCCC 2002-2003 before enlisting in August 2003. Algrim graduated from U.S. Marine Basic Training November 2003 and was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division where he received many awards including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Combat Action Medal.

Algrim was a GCHS athlete competing in wrestling and cross country. "He was a smart kid and had things going for him," David Obermeyer, assistant cross country coach, said.

Algrim wrestled for four years at GCHS and Monte Moser, varsity wrestling coach, described him as a good kid and a hard worker.

"He'll be remembered as always being upbeat and always smiling. He had an infectious grin. He would come in the room and would always be smiling."

Both his coaches and instructors described him as a cheerful person.

"The first thing I remember about Seth is his smile. He was so full of life. At the time I had him in classes I wanted him in every class I had," Don Murrel, welding instructor, said.

His friends had come to think of him the same way and also as part of their family.

"Seth was as close as a brother," Tim Murray, a close friend, said. "His spirits were always high and there was hardly a day you would find him unhappy."

Algrim is the son of Bruce and Jackie Algrim, Garden City. His brother, Lucas, currently attends GCCC and is a member of the Broncbuster cross country team.
