Governor Kathleen Sebelius will deliver the opening address to Southwest Kansas high school students Friday, Nov. 3 for the 20th Annual Hispanic Student Day at GCCC.

The event is designed to focus on career and educational opportunities and will include a series of sessions on college admissions, success in higher education, student financial aid, collegiate athletics, the Student Support Services Program, selection of college majors, and other subjects.

Career program sessions in law enforcement, cosmetology, art, computers and education will be available.

Tim Cruz, former Garden City mayor and candidate for the Kansas State Board of Education, will address Hispanic roles in politics and public service.

Activities, centered at the Dennis Perryman Athletic Complex, will begin with registration from 8 to 8:45 a.m., and conclude at 3:30 p.m.

"Hispanic Student Day usually brings in young men and women from schools all over the area, and the emphasis is on advancing to higher education for the future," said Manuela Vigil, one of two coordinators for the day's activities.

More than 250 area high school students are expected to attend.
