The men and women soccer teams were eliminated from Region VI competition last week, advancing further in postseason play than last year.
The Lady Busters began region play on the road in Hutchinson Oct. 23. The Lady Busters met the Lady Blue Dragons twice in the regular season, with Hutchinson winning both duels. The Lady Blue Dragons came out with a third victory, a 5-0 shutout, sending the Lady Busters home from competition.
"I was a lot more comfortable playing them this time, the girls did good," Head coach Jeff Huffman said.
The Lady Busters (3-9-1) finished sixth in Jayhawk Conference standings, with No. 7 Johnson County capturing the conference title.
"The women did better than last year, they were definitely a lot more competitive," Huffman said.
In the first round of the men's regions competition, the Busters hosted Cloud County T-Birds Oct. 24. The Busters scored four goals in the first half but ran into a little bit of trouble in less than 30 seconds left. Goalie Julian Gonzalez, Garden City, and Derek Schmille, Albuquerque, N.M., collided when going after the ball, smacking heads and flying up in the air. With both men on the ground the goal was wide open, but when the T-Birds took a shot, defender Rodrigue Fontem, Cameroon, Africa, deflected it. Gonzalez was pulled from the game for precautionary reasons.
"I think he had a concussion," Huffman said. "If you're hurt you're hurt, that's why you have backups."
In the second half the Busters started where they left off, scoring another three goals, and eliminating Coffeyville from postseason play with a 7-0 victory.
The Busters traveled to Topeka to face Coffeyville in the second round of competition Oct. 28. The first half remained scoreless, but Luis Posada, Garden City, was ejected from the game with less than four minutes remaining in the half for consecutive sliding kicks that earned him a red card. As the game progressed, the Busters accumulated two more red cards. The Ravens took advantage of the Buster losses, scoring two goals and capturing a 2-0 shutout, sending the Busters home. The Busters (8-9-2) finished second in the conference, only two points behind Neosho County.
"Everyone had high expectations [and] a lot of expectations were left unfulfilled," Huffman said.
