Team supports, aids student in success

With his dark, bushy beard and band T-shirts Paden Daniels doesn't seem like the average member of the meats team.

"His looks [make him stand out]," Clint Alexander, meats team coach, said.

Daniels,Athol, Kan., has had success at several meats team competitions. He placed 3rd high individual at the High Plains contest in Plainview, Texas Oct. 29 where teammate Heather Veltri placed 8th high individual and Matthew Morales placed 12th high individual.

Oct.15 at the American Royal contest in Emporia, Kan., Daniels placed 3rd high individual overall, Veltri placed 7th high individual, Morales placed 10th high individual, and Tami Oberheim placed 15th high individual. Daniels also had two first places and a third last year.

Daniels was named to as the winner of the 2006 GCCC Rachel Hamilton awarded winner, and was named as a member of the 2006 first team all-American meats team, for which he was award a $500 scholarship.

"He's also on first team, which is a combination of points [during contests] and GPA," Alexander said.

According to Alexander, Daniels has many characteristics that help him with his success.

"He's smart and he doesn't get rattled," Alexander said. "He stays calm in a competition and remembers what he learned in class.

Alexander also said Daniels is a key part to the GCCC meats team.

"He's very consistent, he doesn't get a big head, he's very well liked and a team leader."

Austin Rogers, Hanston, Kan., said there are other characteristics a successful meats team member needs.

"You need a good personality, you can't let things keep you down, and you walk away knowing you did the best you could," Rogers said.

As well as being named on the first team, he also is one of GCCC's top scorers.

"He's the fourth top scorer of all time at GCCC, just under me, he missed it by a point," Alexander said.

Daniels said the team is an encouragement to him, and each other.

"You have to have support," Daniels said. "The team pushes you. They see things you don't see and you see things they don't, you help each other out."
