Jean Warta, former assistant coordinator of the Kansas Main Street Program for the Kansas Department of Commerce, began this Fall as director of the Business and Industry Institute at GCCC.
The B&I institute provides employee training for public and private organizations and agencies as part of the GCCC continuing education and community services division. Last year the institute served 459 individuals and conducted 69 workshops, seminars and short-term courses. Short-term courses included business computing, occupational safety, website design, health administration compliance, first aid, CPR, workplace supervision and Spanish skills directed at retail personnel.
B&I provides training in marketing, employee law, Kansas driver's license requirements as well as continuing education class for Kansas plumbing licenses.
"In marketing, Jean has been involved in retail and business promotions, market positioning strategies, image marketing, communications and partnership building, so her skills were a great fit for the institute," Nancy Harness, associate dean of the division, said. "On top of that, Jean has strong experience in managing and marketing businesses and organizations, budgeting, bookkeeping, production, customer service, hiring and supervision."
Warta, who moved to Garden City from Topeka, Kan., arranges the scheduled courses and customized contract training for large and small businesses.
"Education and training are key components in operating a small or large business successfully," Warta said.
