The Lady Busters are 1-11 on the season, ending the Jayhawk Shootout in Coffeyville with mixed results and losing one of their key players.
With less than two minutes left in the Lady Busters' game against No. 3 Coffeyville Dec. 2, Sharniece Saunders, Waterbury, Conn., jumped up for a rebound and crashed on the floor. Saunders was down several minutes before she had to be carried off the court with a right leg injury. Head coach Jake Ripple says Saunders is fine but would not further comment on the incident.
In the first half, the Lady Busters jumped out to a 7-4 lead thanks to Saunders's hot shooting. The Lady Ravens turned up the pressure and applied a 2-1-2 full court trap. This allowed the Lady Ravens to pull away for a 47-20 at halftime, and eventually a 92-45 victory over the Lady Busters
The Lady Busters were held to 26 percent shooting and turned the ball over 31 times. Saunders recorded a double-double with 21 points and 20 rebounds before leaving the game with the injury. LaTaish Brown, Garden City, followed with nine points, and Whitnie Young, Richardson, Texas, had eight.
The previous night, the Lady Busters recorded their first victory of the season against Neosho County 56-54.
As the first half came to a close, the Lady Busters had a slim two-point lead 29-27. Both teams traded baskets on the way to 27 points apiece in the second half. But it was the Lady Busters that walked away with the victory.
"I think Coach Ripple, myself, Coach Banda and each of the kids felt pretty happy," Assistant Coach Brady Jasper said. "I think that everyone was happy for themselves, but happy for their teammates as well."
The Lady Busters had three players scoring in double figures, led by Saunders with 17 points and 16 rebounds. Young had 14, and Samantha Matthews, Holcomb, Kan., added 12. Brown chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds, and five steals. Brown says everyone was happy about the win and that is all they could talk about.
