As of 12:01 a.m. last Monday the smoking ban which was approved in August was put into affect by the Governing Body of the City of Garden City.

The ordinance bans smoking in all bars, private clubs/fraternal organizations, educational facilities, and public seating areas.

Also it prohibits smoking within 50 feet of any entrance or exit of a facility where smoking in banned.

Yet life on campus goes on as usual.

"I don't think it's really taken effect yet," Edgar Heredia, Ulysses Kan. said. "I don't think people even think about it, they just light up like usual."

Heredia says he feels something will change over time.

"Things can't change from one day to the next. It's going to take a little while to get use to. Once people do then they won't even care that they have to walk away from buildings to smoke. It will just be normal."

The purpose of Ordinance No. 2339 to improve and protect the public's health by eliminating the smoking in designated public places; acknowledge the right of nonsmokers to breath smoke-free air; and recognize that the need to breathe smoke -free air shall have priority over the choice to smoke.

GCCC is in the process of purchasing no smoking signs and will enforce the ordinance on campus.
