Alanea Phillips, Pratt, Kan., and Sarah Cole, Garden City, were recognized as members of the 2007 All-Kansas Academic Team, sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society.

The honored individuals are part of a statewide student body of more than 72,000 people enrolled in over 615,000 credit hours taken annually at the 19 Kansas community colleges.

"The students are among the state's finest, not only in the academic sphere, but also in terms of service and citizenship," said Rod Risley, executive director of PTK International.

Each Kansas scholar will also become a nominee for the 2007 All-USA Academic Team, sponsored by the newspaper USA Today, PTK and the American Association of Community Colleges. All Kansas scholars will receive proclamations issued by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, $300 scholarships and academic medallions.

The Kansas Regents universities also provide $1,000 scholarships for All-Kansas Academic Team award recipients who transfer to their campuses.

Phillips and Cole will be acknowledged for their academic accomplishments during the 12th annual Phi Theta Kappa All-Kansas Academic Team honors luncheon Feb. 15 in Topeka.

Phillips is majoring in elementary education, with plans for teaching grade school students, possibly in the field of music. Cole is currently studying nuclear medicine, with the career goal of helping cancer patients.
