State of the Union presents future plans

Issue date: 2/1/07 Section: Opinion
War, immigration and the search for alternative fuel sources has me wondering how President George W. Bush plans to solve America's issues during his last year in office.

During the annual State of the Union address, Bush said, "for too long our nation has been dependent on foreign oil." In his address, Bush said he plans to cut imported oil dependence by 75 percent and reduce gasoline usage by 20 percent during the next ten years.

Within those years, Bush would like to see an increase in renewable fuels by setting a mandatory 35 billion gallon target.

"Achieving these ambitious goals will dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but its not going to eliminate it," said Bush. To aid in reducing our dependence on foreign oil, new energy sources are being discovered. Those energy sources include clean coal technology, solar, wind energy and clean, safe nuclear power. Other renewable fuel sources being produced in America are ethanol and biodiesel. When we are capable of successfully wielding these renewable sources, "we will have cut our total imports by the equivalent of three quarters we now import from the Middle East," said Bush.

Energy is vital to America and its bustling society as well as its people. September 11, 2001 was the day that America began its war with Iraq.

"We know with certainty that the horrors of that September morning were just a glimpse of what the terrorists intended for us… unless we stop them," said Bush.

An internal struggle is causing Iraq to be at war with itself and us; Bush plans to help "build free societies and share in the rights of all humanity." I completely agree with Bush in his effort to mend the schisms in Iraq's society.

"They preach with threats, instruct with bullets and bombs and promise paradise for the murder of the innocent," Bush said. Domination with bullets and bombs, according to Bush, is the reason the Iraqis are at war with each other and us.

Since the events of 9/11, we have been attempting to aid and restore order in Iraq. War has taken America's focus off its own needs and thus, illegal immigration has become more evident.
