Twelve students from Black Student Union are attending the 30th annual Big XII Conference on Black student government at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. The conference begins today Feb. 15 and will continue through Feb. 18.

"It's basically a Big XII conference of all the local BSU groups of the Big XII schools," Ben Bell, BSU president, said. "There are only about two junior colleges that go. Garden City is a regular up there, we get invited usually every year."

Workshops and panels will be presented on a variety of issues including health awareness, community involvement, entrepreneurship, women's rights and identity protection.

"We'll be learning different ways to help our schools, benefit the area, and ways to raise money," Bell said.

Devin Carpenter, Wichita, Kan., said the conference attendees were chosen by Bell.

"There are 12 football players going," Carpenter said. "Ben Bell is kind of the head of it all. Since we helped out with the Martin Luther King Day event, he asked us to go. Since we're going, we have to be in BSU next year, it's part of the deal. "

Bell said the 12 students who are attending the conference were chosen by involvement in BSU events.

"Originally nine were supposed to go," Bell said. "We got extra funding for 12. It was the same 12 people that helped every time so we didn't want to leave anyone out."

Along with many presentations, keynote speakers will attend. Rev. Irving D. Fryar, Sr., an author, actor, spokesperson, pastor and the NFL's no. 1 pick in 1984, will speak at the conference. Other speakers include track and field coach, Beverly Kearny, public speaker, Kirk Nugent, author and public speaker, Jonathan Sprinkles, activist, author and lecturer, Dr. Safisha Nzingha Adeleke, college recruiting director, Terry Goods and former University of Nebraska football player, author and public speaker, Aaron Davis.
