HALO were among the hundreds to converge at the Topeka State House Tuesday, February 6. to rally various issues. One of the key topics was college tuition.
"We wanted to make sure they were supporting the bill and show why we need the bill," Armando Minjarez, HALO representative, said. "We got a real positive response, this was a good rally for a just cause."
The rally was led by the Sunflower Community Action group, a non-profit organization based in Wichita coalitioned with 35 community organizations including Garden City.
Kansas officials have proposed repealing a 2004 law that allows certain illegal immigrant students to attend Kansas colleges by paying only in-state rather than out-of-state tuition. The law is supported by Hispanic organizations.
Some of the criteria are that the students must graduate from a Kansas high school and pledge to apply for citizenship.
The group of more than 500 also protested payday and car-title loans. The group spent the afternoon visiting with lawmakers and other officials seeking support for their cause.
