"Dr. Clayton Tatro has distinguished himself as a devoted and enthusiastic leader with a balance of community college classroom and administrative experience," Eric Ammons, FSCC board of trustees president, said. "He is well respected at both the community college level and the state of Kansas where he serves on a number of educational committees. The Board of Trustees is excited about the direction of FSCC and its future and is working to ensure a smooth transition."
Tatro has served as Dean of Learning Services and chief academic officer at GCCC since 2001, handling responsibilities ranging from strategic planning, budgeting, staffing and evaluation to faculty development, course scheduling, instructional evaluation and assessment of student outcomes. He also supervises the Technical Education Division and Continuing Education and Community Services Division, as well as general education and learning resources programs.
Tatro handled most of the same responsibilities, under the title of Dean of Instruction, from 1998 to 2001. From July of 1998 until January of 1999, he worked as the GCCC interim dean of instruction. He earned his doctorate in the Community College Leadership Program at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, December 2006. Tatro completed a Master of Science degree in psychology at Pittsburg State University in 1995 and a bachelor of science in psychology there in 1994. He is a native of Glasco, Kansas.
"This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time, a dream come true," Tatro said. "I was fortunate that the completion of my dissertation and the offer of a new job came about at the same time."
Before his selection as interim dean of instruction, Tatro served as a Social Science Division instructor from 1995 to 1998, with responsibilities including teaching, assessment, academic advising, curriculum development and program review, as well as committee work and professional development. Since 2003, he has led the Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) initiative for institutional accreditation renewal.
"The biggest accomplishment has been the AQIP accreditation," Tatro said. "Other accomplishments would be the Title III grant that we had and the writing of the Title V grant we did and trying to strive for an adequate and appropriate balance between general, technical, and continuing education. We really advanced those three missions while I've been here under Carol's [Ballantyne] leadership."
