GCCC meats team competed at the Southwest Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, Feb. 3, where they received last place.
"They [team] just didn't do what they were coached to do, so they got dead last," Clint Alexander, meats team coach, said. "We had mental errors. A couple of math errors, one person left a question blank and another person had to choose between three and four and they chose two."
Meats team member Blake Sanders, Eutis, Neb., said the team was too self-assured as they began the competition.
"We did not do very good," Sanders said. "We went in overconfident."
Alexander said that despite Danny Koons, Kayla Hurley, Blake Sanders and Mandy Rollins placing individually, he was disappointed with how the team placed.
"I'm really frustrated and I'm sure it's frustrating for them too," Alexander said. "I've never had a team place this low."
The Southwestern contest was the second contest in a row the meats team placed last at.
"At our last contest [National Western in Denver] we didn't beat anyone," Alexander said. "The storms threw us off, we didn't even get to practice before."
Alexander said the team has been doing well and maybe their time is up.
"We set a good streak so maybe it's just our time to be on the bottom," Alexander said, "Houston is in three weeks, we'll see what happens."
Sanders said he is fairly certain the team will practice a lot more in response to their placing at the Southwest Competition.
"We're probably going to practice more and practice harder now," Sanders said.
Alexander said they might start from scratch with new recruits if there is no improvement, despite his coaching.
"I'm too competitive. This judging is my life and it upsets me when the contests are easy and we don't do well especially when I taught them everything that was in there," Alexander said.
